iPhone No More. Now "i" Android

*Sigh* Mobile phones annoy me.  Nothing ever meets the bill for me.  Either I have too high expectations, or all mobile phone makers fall short.  I'm going to vote on all manufacturers falling short.

I have been using an iPhone 4 for a while.  In a previous post, I wrote about wanting to dump it because of my disdain for Apple.  Once again I am attempting to rid myself of the Apple pocket bling.

Why?  For one, I absolutely detest being told that I am not using my stuff the right way.  Every time a problem comes up with an iPhone, the first thing that happens is that you get told that you are using it wrong, or you didn't  do things the proper way.  This happens from Steve Jobs all the way down to the lowly 'Genius Bar' attendant.  First it was the 'death grip', which Mr. Jobs said was all the user's fault for holding it wrong.  Then he fired the guy who designed the antenna system for iphone 4, and offered everybody a free case to sort of make up for it.  Nice big fat lie there, Mr. Jobs.

Now my iPhone 4 spontaneously kicks into "headset" mode, so it thinks I have a headset plugged in, and therefore disables the speaker on the phone making calls impossible.  After reading crazy amounts of instructions and tutorials on how to kick the phone out of 'headset' mode, it seems that the consensus is that this is a SOFTWARE problem, not a hardware problem.  Plugging in and removing a certain pair of headphones 100's of times (not kidding) seems to fix it, although it uses up 10-15 mins of your life in the process.   Ok, I lived with it for a few more months happening about once every other week, expecting this software bug to be fixed in a new release.  This last release was a hopeful (4.2.1), so I updated and re-setup all my stuff, download all my apps again, etc. etc. only to have the stupid problem occur again on me right away.

What happens when I speak to somebody at Apple?  They tell me that it's because I am *not* putting in and taking out the headset the right way.  I was utterly mortified that this guy presumes to tell me that I don't know how to use a headphone jack.  Never mind the fact that this problem happens spontaneously while I am on a call, when I'm not even using a headset or anything in the headphone jack...  Of course, no effort was made to fix the problem, just that the issue is caused by my apparent stupidity.  I walked away with the same broken phone.

Somewhere along the way of Apple's apparent tremendous financial success, they decided that customer service was no longer important.  If they polished up their support 1/2 as much as their aluminum unibody sculpted hardware, they might just be surprised that they start to get positive feedback.  Right now I think the people they get positive feedback from are the general populace who don't know anything at all about computers.  For them, Apple computers are awesome: they just work (mostly), which is better than the alternatives.

For me, my love of the iPhone is now over.  I've moved to an Android phone (again). Specifically an LG Optimus T, which seems to be both good value and pretty good performance.  Lets see if this sticks, or if I need to try something else.  So far the experience has been positive, and I'll let you know when I have more to share.

I recently got a new Macbook Air 11" (the 2012 version) and loaded it with goodies like 8GB ram and 2GHz Core i7.  What I DIDN'T upgrade was the internal SSD.  My config came with 128GB SSD and I refused to pay $300+ to upgrade it to 256GB.  Yeah I know, some call me cheap, but SSds cost $75-$150 for 240GB, so adding another 128GB for $300 seemed way too steep for me.  I figured "ok, I'm going to make 128G work!"
